40k - Angels of Darkness

Anyone familiar with it? I've never read Gav Thorpe before. I was buying a book for the plane ride, and was about to pick up Titanicus when I saw this interesting-looking (and much more portable) paperback. I'm about 1/3 through (couldn't wait for the trip) and so far it's a very interesting dissection of the Fallen Angels and a good look at the mindset of the Deathwing/Inner Circle of the Dark Angels.

I wouldn't put Thorpe up with Abnett, but so far he is above Counter and light-years better than Goto. From what I understand, he was primarily involved more with game resources than fiction.

I haven't read that particular book, but Thorpe is a pretty good writer.

I'm just happy he's doing the Dark Angels some credit. Their a hard faction to write for. So much history but so little of it understood.

So far, he's done a good job of avoiding the idea of "Fallen=evil, Deathwing=good" without further exploration.

Thats good. Its one of those traps that other writers get stuck up in.

Finished it on the plane down to Fla. I won't post it here, but there is a GREAT quote about Lion El'Jonson, one that completely turns around the current-universe 40k books' tendency to regard the primarchs as objects of worship under the Emperor. Very nice read - not quite up with the best of Abnett, but far better than Goto or even Counter. I'm looking forward to getting Swallow's Blood Angels omnibus next.

I'll have to check it out next time I'm passing by GW.
