data plan

Post by McAvoy »

My Android OS is eating waaaayyy too much of my data plan. Currently at 4.62 GB, it is using 1.16 GB. It is the second biggest after YouTube.

What is causing this? It just happened within a month or two. I looked it up and various answers for it.

Updates are manual. Anything?

I got Verizon on a RAZR HD phone.

Say what? My OS barely registers, it's about 1.2% of my total data usage. I have no idea what could be causing that or why.

Autoupdates or rss feeds.

No auto updates and no RSS feeds.

Yeah, since this is literally costing me money I would like to know what is causing it. I went to Verizon store and they told me cut down text messages. Wtf?

Have you tried to reset the phone?

It occurs to me: there is such a thing as Android malware. Has the phone been slow or acting strangely in any other manner?

Again, if this is the cause a reset should resolve it.

Watching porn on it?

To reset my iphone I can do it through itunes, so I imagin something similar applies to your phone.

Hmm, on 4.0+ it should be in your settings menu under personal. "Back up and Reset." That should wipe the phone and restore it to factory settings. However turn off the app auto restore. You're going to want to check the apps you're using as some apps contain.... well it could be classified as malware.

I managed to find it.

Watching porn on it would actually fall under the internet browser for the phone not the OS.

I reset it and them reinstalled the backup. So far so good. Only at 155 MB since yesterday for the OS. It may seem high but it that was since the backup. It hasn't gone up since then.

Yeah, that's really high. I don't hit 100MB for the OS in a week.

It jumped up to 265 so the reset didn't work.

You may want to try Verizon again, see if they can nuke the phone for you as in wipe it completely clean and totally reinstall everything. There's no way your OS should be consuming that kind of data.

Yeah, looking at my data usage for the last week my Android OS used 3.65MB of data. For the entire last month it's been 25.6MB.

Yeah I checked with a bunch of people and their OS barely registers.

348 MB as of today. God I miss my old phone. At least with that I got grandfathered in with unlimited data.
