- Introduction
Background:

The United Federation of Planets can trace it’s origin to the United Coalition, a treaty organization pledging promises of peace and mutual defense. This alliance grew over time to strengthen bonds and include new members until in 2323 representatives from several different governments met on the planet of Babel to draw up the Articles of Federation. Since its birth the United Federation of Planets has been a strong alliance of states that has sought to explore the galaxy. They have attracted many new races since its creation, and today boasts many thousands of intelligent species among its members.

Executive Role: The President of the United Federation of Planets is elected from the most dominant party of the Legislature. The President is then responsible for the Execution of Laws passed in the Federation, as well as for directing the Federation in times of crisis.
Legislative Role: The Federation Council is the Primary Legislative Body of the Federation. The Council is made up of 50 representatives. Each world has its own political ideologies, and indeed there are many thousands of tiny political parties that are unique to each world, but the major parties span across worlds. The Council is re-elected at most every 8 years. The Council is responsible for passing the Laws of the Federation, and general upkeep. The Supreme Assembly is the Secondary Legislative Body of the Federation. The Assembly is made of a single representative from each member worlds. The Assembly member election schedules and terms are selected by the planet from which they represent. The Assembly is responsible for overseeing the government.
Judicial Role: The Federation Interplanetary Supreme Court of Justice is the supreme Judicial body of the Federation. Along with several smaller courts this is the only structure that allows for judicial action across cultures and customs. Although rare the Court has on occasion over ruled planetary laws in specific cases to uphold the structure of the Federation.
