As the opposing forces close the Commander Tsuki of the Klingon Armada orders group 4 to provide flank protection to ward off the approaching Starfleet Destroyers Admiral Staplic has deployed on the Federation Left Flank and task Hos Hegh Group 1 to provide fire support. Being just inside beam weapon range at 275,000 KM they lend assistance to group 4 composed of old B'Rel Class cruisers and open a steady fire on the Defiant Class ships in group 2.

The smaller ships shrug off the fire of the Brel class ships but a good number fall and are damaged by the Hos Hegh's even at this extreme range. Six ships are destroyed outright at the extreme range and another 14 are damaged.

On the right flank of the Stafleet forces the Klingon light forces, comprised of group 5's B'Rels and group 6 and 7's Birds of Prey opens fire on the center most Prometheus group. At the edge of their range the older weapons and ships have difficulty doing much against their newer and faster opposition. Most shots go wild and only a handful of ships are damaged and destroyed.

Further back the two unengaged Hos Hegh groups lend their torpedoes to the assault and achieve slightly better results against the distant targets (450,000 km) managing to destroy one ship and damage another 3.

Admiral Staplic knowing this might be his last chance before his main body is under the guns of the heavy Klingon battle cruises looks to make the most of it while at longer range. He orders groups 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to fire torpedoes at the third grouping of Hos Hegh's at a range of 550,000 km on average. Starfleets gunners are on target today, aided by the sheer number of targets and the volume of fire, and manage to destroy 25 ships and damage another 60.

On his left flank Staplic orders his two Defiant groups (1 and 2) to open fire on the B'Rels in front of them. At the moderate range of 200,000 km his ships open a heavy fire on their old opponents and blast 21 of them to pieces and send another 58 limping away damaged.

Group 9, not having a clear shot at the target of the main torpedo barrage targets group 6 comprised of ancient Birds of Prey with all their weapons at a range of 200,000 KM and do massive damage. Finally the distant groups 3 and 4 open fire with torpedoes on the same group. The fire of the modern ships rips them apart destroying 30 while leaving 113 in various states of disrepair.

Total Losses

Federation 7 ships destroyed, 17 Damaged
Klingons 76 Ships destroyed, 231 Damaged

Just an FYI, Starfleet got some very good rolls but is obviously well suited to long range sniping where they have a huge advantage. The Klingons don't do well at long range, hence the outcomes but they also did not get as good of rolls this turn as well.

For the next submission I need movement and directions on what to do with damaged ships (send them out or retain them at 50% rating).

The Federation force moves aggressively on both flanks with the commander of the KDF concentrates his forces for a knockout blow against the Federation center. Starfleet group 2 and Klingon group 4 are locked in a melee and must engage one another this turn.

Admiral Staplic, having manuvered his main body back and away from the Klingons oders groups 1,5,6,10,11,12,13 and 14 to open fire on the large group of Hos Hegh Battlecruisers comprising KDF group 1. Taking fire from behind, the sides and in front the grouping of more than 330 Battlecruisers as assailed from all sides. A massive torpedo volly from the Federation main body kills a handful of ships and damages many more while causing general disoranization. The group is then blasted on three sides by over 180 smaller Stafleet ships of the Defiant and Prometheus types. 40 Battlecruisers are destroyed outright and another 190 suffer various degrees of damage.

The Federation commander is pleased with his forces attacks on the left but looks to his right and finds little good news.

His 7th, 8th and 9th groups have engaged the 3rd KDF group and achieved little. Group 7 manages to kill 6 more Hos Heghs while destroying 9 more of the crippled ships still with the group. The 8th and 9th Starfleet groups have difficulty picking out their targets and their torpedo volleys achieve nothing at all.

Finally the distant 3rd and 4th Defiant groups open torpedo fire on KDF group 7. At the extreme range they are able to destroy 5 Bird of Prey and damage 10 more.

Meanwhile Commander Tsuki hammers his fist on the command table and demands his main body destroy the Federation cruisers in front of them. His subordinates panic and open a disorganized fire on their opponents.

Groups 1 and 5 are ordered to target Starfleet group 5. The commander of group 1 ask for claification as he has Starfleets 5th group right under his guns and is told to follow his damn orders. Group 1 opens fire at an angle on its target, along with group 5 of the KDF which has a direct line of sight. The combined firepower of over 500 Klingon ships against 45 Prometheus class vessles is somewhat offset by the odd firing angle which prevent the Klingons from reaping the bonus of their all forward design. The Federation group commander is just able to hold his command together through a mixture of manuvering and luck. Over half of his force falls damaged or destroyed, with 6 ships being total losses and 23 being damaged.

Groups 2,3,6 and 7 all open fire on Starfleets 6th group comprised of 45 Prometheus class ships. The combined fire of over 1,000 Klingon ships blazes through empty space and destroys outright 34 of the smaller ships. The remaining 11 ships of the force are all damaged and group 6 routs with what ships that can still move headed for the rear.

KDF Group 4 and Starfleet Group 2 are locked in a close in battle with more than 300 ships cramed into less than 50,000 KM's of space. Group 4 is already reeling from the beating it took in the previous exchange and the Defiant types move in quickly. In a tight turning close in battle the Defiant's destroy 200 B'Rel types in a vicious close in exchange of firepower. 29 B'Rels are left to limp off as KDF group 4 is left immobilized and ineffective due to massive losses. In exchange they manage to send destroy another 21 Defiant types while damaging 4 more. Opposing ships may now move freely through the wreckage of this unit and they survivors will only return fire if fired upon.

Some intersting things going on here.

The Klingons older ships are not holding up well, which is not a shock. The KDF still has far more firepower if they can get close enough to use it, evidence by the thrashing they delivered to group 6 and the pretty bad beating they put on group 5.

Losses are highest in groups that are retaining damaged ships. You always damage more ships than you kill but if you retain damaged ships remember that if you have 20 retained and another 15 are caculated as damaged that turns into 15 kills the next round.

The Federation on the other hand is not having a ton of luck with its torpedo spam strategy. When you get to close range with beam weapons damage goes up dramatically. For example despite having the same outcome, large victory, the large Federation torpedo fire on KDF 1 with a damage roll of 29 only killed 4% of that force.

In contrast the KDF forces 1 and 5 against Federation force 5 had a damage roll of 52 (less than double) but acheived like 6 times the damage rate of the Federation forces because they were at a more decisive range.

The moral of the story is that you had best be able to either run or screen your torpedo ships if that is your strategy. You need two very good rolls to do a lot of damage at more than 500,000 km. Otherwise you will just be picking away at the enemy.

Finally the Melee resolved about as expected. The chances of any forces making it two rounds in that close of quarters is alomst none.

Commander Tsuki, having finally closed to beam weapon range on the main Federation body orders his ships to open fire on their Federation counterparts. The Klingon ships open up a tremendous barrage, even though it is still at the edge of effective range for their disruptors.

KDF Group 3 opens a healthy fire on the Sovereign class ships in Starfleet group 12. The sky fills with distruptor blast and four of the gracefull battlecruisers are blasted to pieces. Another 10 are heavily damaged and limp away from the battlefield towards safety where they will play no futher role today. In total 14 of the 43 ships are lost to further use in this first exchange.

Worse is to come as KDF Groups 1,2 and 6 open up on the Alliance Cruisers of group 10. A full third of that force is destroyed or damaged and retreat from the field of battle leaving only 19 of the original 30 ships still standing.

Finally on the left edge of the battlefield the KDF has some success against the light cruisers and destroyers that have been plauging their older ships. Closing to suicidally short range the 400 plus older ships of KDF groups 5 and 7 strike hard against the many damaged components of the 5th Prometheus cruiser group destroying every ship and sweeping them from the field.

Admiral Staplic, still trying to envelop the KDF in his trap has pushed around both flanks and orders his flanking units to fire at the quickly passing Klingon main body. Groups 1,2,7,8 and 9 all attempt to get at Klingon group 2, with groups 3 and 4 from Starfleet flinging more torpedoes into the fray. The range makes this dificult. Groups 3 and 4 acheive little from extreme range. All told the 350 Starfleet ships managed to take down just 27 of the Klingon Battlecruise and Commander Tsuki's flag ship has survived intact. Another 63 ships suffer some damage but stay in the fight.

To the right of his flag group Admiral Staplic orders groups 11 and 14 to place fire on the already hurt KDF group 3. Group 11 is rattled by the onrushing Klingon ships and shoots wildly, acheiving just a handfull of successes. Group 14, comprised of Sovereign Class ships calmly pumps out more torpedoes with a great deal of accuracy. Combined the groups manage to blunt but not stop the advance of their opponent. They finish of the damaged ships from earlier in the battle and manage to kill another 26 opponents.

The Federation Alliance class cruisers get into the act and open a furious fire on Klingon group 6, attempting to kill the pesky BOP's that are screening the Klingon main body. Despite their enthusiasm only manage to kill 16 of the nimble ships while finishing of 37 more cripples.

Finally it its last moments Federation group 5 fires back on Klingon group 7 in a battle of mutual annihilation. Before being destroyed the less than 40 Prometheus class ships manage to take out 31 BOP and spread damage over another 189.

Losses so far

Federation
114 Ships Destroyed, 36 Damaged (13% Destroyed, 5% Damaged)

KDF
524 Ships Destroyed, 559 Damaged (26% Destroyed, 27% Damaged)

119- BOP

After a long run in under the Federations torpedo fire the Klingons are now within killing range and things should get interesting. The key will be to close and stay close to the Federation main body. The three Hos Hegh groups are by far the most powerful groups on the field still.
