It could very well be real. What seem like impossible coincidences happen a lot, because in a world of 7 billion people doing a lot of the same things repeatedly there are many chances for unlikely events to occur. Thus, though it can be highly unlikely some event may happen in any particular place and time, it becomes much more likely to happen somewhere at some time.
