1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

Would neighbouring nations by sea-borders count?

Fear not! That's only the King James translation. A direct modern translation from the Hebrew texts reads, "You can have [other, different]^* male or female slaves. These are the male and female slaves that you buy from the nations around you. You can also buy [them, such] from the resident aliens who live among you, and from their families that are born in your land. (Leviticus 25:44 - 45)

^* - Leviticus 25:39 - 43 refer to fair treatment of non-aliens indentured for debt.

Leviticus is rather interesting for its time in that it spoke on the treatment and purchase of slaves and servants. However I am fully against giving up pork... not going to happen.
