So does anyone have an idea on this, cuz my dad asked me this when we were watching The Phantom Menace?
When does Star Wars take place in relation to our time? Is it set in our past, or our future? It DOES NOT matter that it is a different galaxy, it has to happen in relation to us or it wouldn't exist.

In a galaxy far, far away. It literally says that on the screen at the opening of each episodic SW movie.

It's a fantasy world like Middle Earth except its science fiction.
Please don't tell me you think Middle Earth is part of our world...

Re: Star Wars timeline
The "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" is something I always too to be non-literal. It's essentially a modern way of saying "Once upon a time..."
However, if we do take it literally, then I would take it to mean that Star Wars is set at least thousands of years ago, if not tens of thousands of years ago or more.
Then consider that in that galaxy, people who look perfectly human evolved. In the Trekverse, this is because the Progenitor species seeded DNA codes onto many worlds - something that happened four billion years ago. It's perfectly possible that the Progenitors travelled far beyond our own galaxy and seeded the same codes in other galaxies, which could explain why humans exist in a galaxy far, far away.
If so there's easily room for the events of Star Wars to happen at more or less any time. Millions of years ago, easily, if we wanted to say that.
