Here's another thing that my son picked up: in the last TV spot, a stormie (not Phasma, a white-armored trooper) produced some sort of parrying weapon that was able to block Finn's lightsaber in HTH combat. What the what?

Here's another thing that my son picked up: in the last TV spot, a stormie (not Phasma, a white-armored trooper) produced some sort of parrying weapon that was able to block Finn's lightsaber in HTH combat. What the what?

Yep. In this Finn-centric trailer, we see the Stormtrooper whip out this half-staff thing with an energy thingy at the end of it, which stuns Finn, and later on Finn's saber is connecting with that end of the stick. It reminds me of General Greivous' robot guards who fought Obi-Wan and Anakin in Revenge of the Sith.

Yep, that's it. Is that a callback to the staves that Greivous' guards used (which were themselves callbacks to the pikes that Palps' red-robed guards used?) OTOH, the shorter length reminds me of the Lasat bo-rifle from Star Wars: Rebels.
