J.J. Abrams has released the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and now that we're done screaming and crying all at once, we're ready to break this thing down. Behold our shot-for-shot, spoiler- and speculation-filled dissection of the new Star Wars trailer.
Warning: a lot of the links have unconfirmed spoilers in them. And there will be mild spoiler talk in this breakdown.
Trailer starts with a narrator saying, "There's been an awakening… Have you felt it?"
Is that Benedict Cumberbatch? That certainly sounds like his dragon voice. Does this mean BC is in the new Star Wars movie? Or is that new character played by Max von Sydow? It sounds more like Cumberbatch, but Sydow is actually confirmed to be in this movie. But... it sounds like Cumberbatch. We've reached out for confirmation, will let you know. UPDATE: WAIT it might be Andy Serkis which makes sense as Andy Serkis was actually cast in this movie.

This wookiepeedia article says that there is a crossgueard lightsaber, 45 degree angle on one side, weilded by Roblio Darté. How do you know these things?Mikey wrote:LOVED the panoramic angle of the Falcon in flight. Enjoyed the close-in shots of the stormies disembarking as if they were an actual military unit. light-cross-guards on the lightsaber... well...
I could probably take it, even rationalize it, if the crossguard blades were at 45-degree angles from the main blade - as in a parrying dagger or triple-blade katar - or set off from the main blade and parallel to it - as in a jutte or sai. Any of those could make sense, as a lightsaber was designed in part to combat other lightsabers and those types of accessories are designed to parry and baffle other bladed weapons. The simple spatha-type guard that was shown, however, probably wouldn't be dangerous to the user, but then again wouldn't be helpful, either. Waste of crystals, IMHO.

I didn't know it, it just made sense to me. Parrying weapons have been common to both Eastern and Western cultures, and generally follow a similar pattern. The sword-breaker or trident parrying dagger, the triple-bladed form of the katar, the sai, the jitte, and others are all of a similar form to serve a similar function. It only stands to reason that a lightsaber accessory to serve the same function would follow a similar form.

I... oh, god. I had to stop watching that halfway through. The voice was horrid, the image used made me nauseous and he doesn't seem to have any good points at the time I stopped watching.
