Best at what? If you want to slash in at a superior enemy fighter formation, rip it up, and get out, then an A Wing would be great but a Y Wing would get you killed. If you wanted to do serious damage to big ships without your own capship support, then a B Wing would be a good choice but an A Wing would be a waste of time. If you need to be able dogfight while still carrying a decent punch then an X Wing could do it, but an A Wing would be too light and a B Wing too sluggish. If you needed something cheap, robust, powerful, a stable gunnery platform and easily maintainable, then the Y Wing beats all the others.

Conclusion: there's a lot of truth in the saying "jack of all trades but master of none".

Well most popular would be the X Wing. The X Wing is probably the most recognizable aside from TIE fighters.

There's also the TIE Defender to consider, or the K-Wing and a host of other starfighters. Best ever? Impsossible to figure out IMHO.

E-Wing too. It was supposed to be a super fighter. Though it had issues early on. Never bothered to find out if these fighters were one offs.

Ks, Es and Defenders were all later models, and the Defender is an Imp - Meste was talking about the rebellion's fighters.

Exactly Captain Seafort. Those that were seen in the trilogy movies. :)
