J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars Episode 7

Post by Nutso »

At long last, Disney's "Star Wars" sequel has found its director — and it's a bold choice, to say the least.

"Star Trek" filmmaker J.J. Abrams is Disney's choice to helm "Star Wars: Episode VII," according to reports published by TheWrap.com and Deadline.com. MTV News has reached out to Disney and Bad Robot representatives for confirmation; inquiries were not immediately returned.

Abrams was frequently cited as a fan-favorite pick for the "Star Wars" job, but his connection to the "Star Trek" series seemingly took him out of the running. Abrams even clarified in a December interview that he was approached by Lucasfilm to direct the new "Star Wars" movie, but he passed out of loyalty to "Trek."
And...Lens flare...

Hmm. Graham, does this mean we'll be able to have a neo-E vs neo-ISD thread? :P

In an interesting sidebar, seismologists have reported a low magnitude but persistent global tremor. The source is widely believed to be millions of nerds shaking with anticipation of flame wars.

Well... I rather very much liked what he did with Star Trek. So I'm okay with this.

Course, now I'm gonna have to write a SW/ST crossover using the Abrams version of SW and ST! *<:*)X

I actually dont like this. I dont think he can pull off Star Wars space opera theme.

Well, as usual, I don't think he's involved with the writing; as a director, he's rather capable.

I think this is actually just what Star Wars needs. Star Wars is in much the same place that Star Trek was, dragged down by lackluster to downright shit offerings for the last few outings. J.J. "Lens Flare" Abrams might not be the most deep director out there but the man can make an exciting, satisfying movie that will get asses in seats. Much like he's good for Trek I think he'll be good for Wars giving them both a solid kick in the ass to get them going again.

I understand what Teaos is saying; Abrams may be slick, hep, and damned interesting at times... but I've never seen anything to indicate that he can create the sense of epic melodrama that 'Wars at its best had. However, I think if a new SW film has to be made, such a radical paradigm shift in the way it's done is just what it needs.

I understand the sentiment and I don't entirely disagree with it. A sweeping space epic isn't really what we've seen out of him before. However I don't really feel like that's such a bad thing. At it's best the EU showed that Star Wars can do lots of different things. It can be used as a rich setting. A few movies that focus in on certain characters or events that don't have reprecussions for the entire galaxy would honestly be welcomed by me.

No. With handhelds, there can be no lens flare.
