I'm GUESSING maybe Tarkin forbade Vader from Force Choking anybody. He wouldn't let him finish off that douchbag he TRIED too

That's it - mainly the complaints he was making at Vader's plan to freeze Han, and the potential loss of profit therein. Compare and contrast Vader's somewhat conciliatory response to that to his usual reaction if people started complaining.

Hmm. I assumed you were talking about Tarkin - he was ordering Vader around in a way that would get virtually anyone short of the Emperor strangled.

I wonder why he let him get away with that. Maybe Tarkin and the Emporer were closer than usual. Most of the officers seemed.........expendable.

Tarkin seems to be one of the few people in the Empire who outrank Vader. Or it's possible that Vader just has a lot of respect for him, for whatever reason.

It's quite possible - Vader didn't become Supreme Commander until after Yavin, when the Emperor decided to start taking the rebellion as a serious threat rather than as a useful enemy to unite people against. Whether Tarkin outranked Vader in the grand scheme of things or not, he certainly outranked him on the Death Star, as the Emperor had personally put him in charge of the project, with Vader along simply to keep an eye on things and step in if Tarkin decided to appoint himself Emperor. Unless that happened, he was specifically subordinated to Tarkin.

Still, Tarken seemed unusually unafraid of Vader. You'd think someone would tread lightly around a man that could kill you with a mere thought, and has serious anger issues.

Just because someone acts in a fashion that doesn't show fear. Doesn't mean they don't have fear.

True.....but I always had the impression Tarkin had some sort of ace up his sleeve.

He was loyal to the Emperor. The Emperor knew this. So long as that is the case, he really had no reason to be afraid.

Still.....Vader can do more damage because he's irritated than most men can do in a towering rage. And if Vader DID kill Tarkin, what would the Emporer have done? Vader was to valuable to dispose of.

No such thing. Vader could be replaced, just as he replaced for Tarkin, just as Thrawn replaced Vader.

That guy in ANH had balls of steel. And good points, too. Holding Leia was dangerous. ;)

I seem to recall Vader had a soft spot for lower-ranked officers. And he liked the competent ones, too.

Thrawn replaced Vader AFTER the death of the Emperor. If Palpie had to make a choice, is he gonna pick an ambitious Grand Moff or his apprentice he's spent 20+years training?

Vader was dead, it was either take his best Moff or just pick the bottom of the barrel.
