The droid's speech is translated into text, Monroe. We see that in ROTJ when Artoo asks Luke where they're going after leaving Tatooine.

Which is most likely due to the droid being outside of the cockpit.RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:The droid's speech is translated into text, Monroe. We see that in ROTJ when Artoo asks Luke where they're going after leaving Tatooine.

No one seemed to have trouble understanding Artoo even when all he had were whistles and clicks.

I was saying that the text was because they were out in space and needed a way to communicate.

Yeah, wasn't really aiming that at you. Since Artoo was outside the cockpit he'd need something to transmit the words to the cockpit. Vacuum is less than a fantastic transmitter.

So... we're all in agreement, then?

Nope, Monroe is still disliking droids. Everyone else agrees.

You know, you don't HAVE to take your droid around with you. You would be well within your right to just leave the little guy in the ship plug at all times. Even if that's all you do, there is a nice feature about the droid plug, upgrading your ship's assistant computer (which is what the droid is mostly) is pretty easy. You don't have to tear anything out of the ship, just swap your old droid for a newer model. Plug and play.Monroe wrote:Going back to the R2 (since I can't check this site on weekends) I guess its just a matter of taste. I would rather not have a little beeping droid following me around. Now if the computer can talk to me and everything fine but I don't want to mess with the droid. Personal choice I guess.

Re: Ship of the week: X-wing starfighter
This all pretty much sums it up. The X-Wing never NEEDED the droid, it just helped.

Alright I agree they're useful. Just not for me... that better? I'd rather be the individual in the unit and have a built in computer that does all the same things a R2 does. But I like Lighthawk's idea if I had to have one.Deepcrush wrote:Nope, Monroe is still disliking droids. Everyone else agrees.
"Hey Monroe grab your R2 we're going to the Station to grab some drinks."
"No R2, you stay and never leave this ship. EVER." Monroe commands his droid.
Sad beeps
Oh yeah. That does sound like a perfect system.

None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

Re: Ship of the week: X-wing starfighter
Building what is effectively an R2 unit into the X-Wing as standard would seriously up the complexity of the fighter, increasing cost and build time. Best to have two seperate manufacturers build the two seperate units, and pair them as they're available.

As I understood it, the X wing needed an R2 unit for hyperspace since it didn't have it's own nav computer
The A wing and the B wing were the first to have them, and they were limited to 10 preset jumps.
