Simon Pegg Will Fulfill Fan Hopes With 'Star Trek: Beyond'

How Star Trek Beyond Is Boldly Going Back To What Made The Franchise Great

So what can we expect from the plot? Well, one thing's for certain: the Enterprise is not going to be hanging around in the spacedock. While the first two reboot films centered around Earth, Pegg and Lin are ready to take the NCC-1701 out on that Five Year Mission we've heard so much about. And as Justin Lin reveals, the possibilities are endless in deep space...

"They haven’t really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet. There's still a lot to be mined from these characters, and the mission sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate. "

Hooray for space exploration! Facing dire situations and the loneliness of space together, the crews went from professional colleagues, to friends, to family. J.J. Abrams' films mostly focused on the relationship between Kirk and Spock, so it'll be nice to see some other characters get time in the spotlight, and Lin's remarks do seem to set up a decent amount of character development.
Challenging Our Ideas

Although it can be fun and silly, or action packed, ultimately Star Trek is very thoughtful. The philosophy of the show rests on Gene Roddenberry's ideals of acceptance and diversity, and this was reflected as the characters of each Trek show dealt with moral dilemmas.

Gene Roddenberry always intended the story to be a philosophy within itself, an optimistic prediction of what the human race could achieve if it only took "special delight in different ideas and different lifeforms". According to Simon Pegg, these ideas will be continued in Star Trek: Beyond.

"It's going to be spectacular, but we're going to underpin that with some genuine 50th Anniversary ideas about what's happening in our world and the Star Trek world and try to make it a bit thoughtful too."

This bodes well for Beyond, but it's not going to be all thought experiments and ethical conundrums. Pegg is also hoping to emulate the spirit of adventure that made Star Trek so fun!

"We just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. It’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know."

Put all this together and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about Star Trek: Beyond. And we don't have too long to wait until we get our first glimpse of the film - the first trailer will be released to coincide with the Star Wars Episode 7 premiere.

What they should do is find something that today would declare offensive, and Trek sees no problem with, as long as it doesn't interfere with their job (so two guys dating is no problem, but if it makes them late for their shift is a problem).

Plus have a five year old on the staff to spot stupid stuff.

Huh, actually the impression I got from the trailer is that the ship might not be getting that much screen time.

But it's nice to hear that they're thinking of some of the optimism in there. It's been around a long time now, but if anything the Trek setting and ethos are becoming more unique as Hollywood puts out ever more grimdark stuff.
