It's too long to post, so I'll just steal SDN's shortened version:
Q: Why do some things appear different in the new Star Trek movie?
A: There is an alternative timeline created by Nero traveling back in time.

Q: Is everything different in the alternative timeline?
A: No, some things remain the same.

Q: Does this alternative timeline wipe out the original timeline (from TOS -Nemesis)?
A: No, quantum theory says they both co-exist.

Q: Does the original timeline continue?
A: Yes, again as explained by quantum theory.

Q: Does this quantum theory approach conform to 'Trek science?'
A: Depends on the episode, but it is explicitly cited by Data in the episode "Parallels.
Good. I like that they've at least put enough thought into it to say "yeah, we know it's different, and here's a reason." My hopes have just raised a tad.

The fact that some precedent was derived from canon is a heartening sight.

Yeah, at least they're demonstrating awareness of, and even some respect for, canon.

too bad it's too late to fix the massively self-contradictory muck that is 'canon'

Good for them. This way they'll effectively be able to do whatever they like, while being explicit that this isn't trying to overwrite TOS, but merely depict what might have happened had some past events turned out differently.

I still think the alt-E-nil is ugly though.

Hey, everyone takes bad pictures now and then (or 90% of the time for me). It'll probably look better in motion on a giant screen.

Well, that is just brilliant....now it doesn't seem so much a cheapshot money scheme....I am actually looking forward to this film even more than before. For some odd reason, I always greatly enjoyed the time-traveling shenanigans.

A heretic! We better watch this one closely until the Ordo Hereticus arrives, he might be a witch...

on a serious note, i am rather warmed that they made the effort to find a solution to the time-traveling, canon-altering stuff from an actual episode, and found a way of doing it that is quite canon as far as i am aware. Thumbs up for the writers, taking at least a bit of notice for this film.

Aye, the fact that they chose an excuse that actualy has precedent in the universe is very heartening.m
