I think that is about one century too optimistic.sunnyside wrote:I don't think we really made the trasition from upstarts to a major power until near the end of the eighteenth century
A shame isn't it? Not so long ago we played golf on the Moon.possibly not until Apollo 11 which I suppose wasn't all that long ago.
Does that sound like any type of consolation for having your ancestral liberty, culture, nation, and race nearly destroyed through the aggressive and occupying presence of Europeans who only came to the Western Hemisphere because they couldn't keep their affairs in order back in Europe and because of greed?Well, I hope its some consolation that you're represented in a positive light in modern movies and get some special bonus rights if you're into hunting or certain types of collecting.

Who you calling fat?Tsukiyumi wrote:Even I think that's a bunch of BS. We had our positives and negatives just like any race. I fly the banner because my grandfather, and great grandfather fought for this country in two world wars, and my other great grandfather was one of the first Native American Texas Rangers. This is still our land, we just share it with a bunch of overweight white folks now.

How is that going? Australia is known in the US for the country trying to eat, burn, or otherwise kill you if you aren't carefull, and ethnic rioting.Teaos wrote:We by in large recognise our British heritage, but New Zealand is so multi Cultural now with massive, native, India and Asian populations that the British feel is wearing away.
New Zealand only gets press for being middle-earth.
What exactly do you mean by that?McAvoy wrote: No... the whole Patriotism that is going on is new.
Whoops. I don't know why I wrote that. I meant late nineteenth century. Specifically I was thinking about the Spanish-American war.Tholian_Avenger wrote:I think that is about one century too optimistic.

What I mean is how much is shown to be patriotic. For example, before it was almost quiet. People had flags and had pride in the country. Supporting the troops wasn't nearly as popular back then as it is now. You almost get lynched if you say you don't support the troops.
Back then you could almost make the claim that being patriotic is mandatory especially during the early years of the Cold War.
Just look at it. Patriotism had a different feel back then as it does now.

I think some of the business about supporting the troops now is due to how poorly they were treated during 'nam.McAvoy wrote:What I mean is how much is shown to be patriotic. I only have patriotism to the extent of having an inbred animosity to the French. 1000 years of mutual distrust is hard to get rid of

I think there are two reasons: there was a patriotic reaction to the 11 September 2001 attack, and a lot of older people felt bad over the way some Vietnam veterans were treated when they returned. I think the "yellow ribbon" movement started in the First Gulf War and blew up with the above.

Grounds Keeper Willie.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

It is a common sentiment. Very common here, anyway.
