How much extra space is available? A larger or seperate treatment room isn't going to take up that much room, I'm referring to a facility allowing them to treat and stabilize battlefield injuries. Not restore them to full health, rather like a Battalion Aid Station.

Edit: what's 5% of a GCS's volume? As a side note, this is the kind of thing that happens in a CVBG or Gator Navy group. The carriers and amphibs have expanded sickbays.
Oh, I see what you mean. I think that would be a good idea too......as well as having more than one EMH program to supplement the Medical staff during "battlefield operations". A battleship could incure heavy causualties.

Hey, ship engineers, is this reasonable?

How long would a phaser take to blow a hole through a blast door, exactly? We've seen them blow through solid rock in a matter of seconds.

It would be impossible if you POLARIZE the door. :-D

Sorry.

I know you were joking but you've got the basis of a godd idea: why not use a shield and a door. A door and then a shield on either side.

That was the idea. The phrasing was in jest but my idea was some sort of force field or electronically reinforced door. That way if you lose power, you still have a door and while you have power, you have a virtually impregnable door.

And i was just looking for an excuse to use that emoticon. :-)

If the shield is the thing resisting the phaser blast, why bother with the door at all?

What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

No the shield is reinforcing the door. As to "why bother with the door"? A door can't lose power if it's already shut. If the power providing the charge goes down there's still a fairly solid blast door in the way.

Thanks. Looked it up on photobucket and thought of Rochey. :-)

Just reverse the polarity of the phaser then........ :Nerd:

But we're back to the question of how a door is going to resist phaser fire. If phasers can blast through significant thickness of rock in seconds, then no feasible door is going to slow an enemy down. You want to go to the expense and weight of putting in hundreds, even thousands of big thick metal doors, so that an enemy has to spend two seconds at a time burning through each one? I think the cost/benefit analysis looks a little iffy on that one myself.

Well, there ARE phaser resistant alloys out there. Not phaser proof, but enough to slow them down.

That was the idea. Doors are phaser resistant since we can't make them phaser proof.

'Fraid I can't remember the exact episode, but there was one time on DS9 when Sisko and Kira were stymied by a door - it was lined with some kind of alloy, so they had to get specialised cutting equipment to get through.

I would still like to have a company of Marines on board. Never know when you'll want to take some prisoners or just look tough when other races come on board.
