Our Ship - Armour

Post by Teaos »

Ok I've been kicking around how to do this for a few weeks now and can't come up with anything that will work perfectly so I'll just do it imperfectly.

This time you get TWO votes. One is for the amount of armour the other is for the type.

According to our first threadwe decided that the Federation in the year 2390ish is going to produce a new class of starship. The class is going to be a Battleship in the size range of the Galaxy and Sovereign class with a beginning mass of 4,000,000 and a production run of about 20 ships given the 80,000,000 tons of resources allowed.

So this week we're doing armour.

The down side to doing it this way is that once we decide on this and move on to other bits a future decision may make us want to change a previous decision but there is nothing we can do about this.

So armour:
While it has never been stated in canon we can assume that more armour would mean reduced speed and manoeuvrability along with the production run since we have a limited supply of resources.

Do we want the armour to be all conventional, ablative, a mixture (and if so what ratio of traditional to ablative)?

Now since there is no hard number for this I was forced to make up some numbers I think sound fair.

So for every 5cm of armour top speed is reduced by 1% off what we latter decide it is capable of.

Also manoeuvrability will be reduced 2% for every 5cm.

And finally production run of the ships currently standing at 20 will be reduced by 1 ship for every 10cm of armour.

I would go with no more than 7.5 - 10 cm, and I'd use ablative; other types of armor may also be damaged, but ablative armor is MEANT to be and would probably therefore be easier to repair. An ablative effect would make it proof against more types of attacks, as well.

Wow thats almost no armour. The Defiant has 20cm according to DITL.

I voted 50cm since this is supposed to be a battleship and literally blast thrugh the enemy lines and scare them to much to attack.

I also voted for a mixture of armour.

Like Mikey said, Ablative is easier to repair but traditional would add to hull strenght.

Hmmm... OK, perhaps I was a bit off with my estimates for the amount.

However, I'd still prefer ablative - I think it actually ends up being stronger per unit thickness, and offers a wider range of protection.

But since it is suppose to be vaporised and knocked off I doubt it would add to the integrity of the hull like traditional armour would.

If we're looking for stats, the DITL calculator has ablative adding more than high-density.

I agree it is better at stopping the weapons fire but it wouldnt add to hull strengh. By that I mean the forces it can withstand with out a SIF.

When did we decide that it was going to be a battleship?

In the other thread, I guess.

I think it should have regenerative armour. Like the Borg.

We should use the ablative armor generators brought back by Voyager/Admiral Janeway.
The amount: as much as we need at any given time. Thickness: as much as we need at any given time.
There, problem solved.
