“Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller has found his next mission: showrunner and co-creator of CBS’ new “Star Trek” series.

He’ll serve as executive producer alongside Alex Kurtzman on the reboot of the sci-fi classic, Variety has learned.

A longtime fan of science fiction, Fuller began his career writing for “Star Trek: Voyager” (1997-2001) and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1997).

“My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire,” said Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.”

The new series is set to bow on CBS in January 2017, then move to CBS’ All Access digital subscription service. It will be the first original series to launch on a broadcast network but air primarily on an SVOD service.

“Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” said Kurtzman. “His encyclopedic knowledge of ‘Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

The creative plan is for the series to introduce new characters and civilizations, existing outside of the mythology charted by previous series and the current movie franchises.

“Star Trek” will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout banner. Kurtzman, Fuller and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers.

“For the past 50 years, ‘Star Trek’ has been a groundbreaking franchise that not only changed the landscape of television, but made a significant impact on pop culture,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios. “When we began discussions about the series returning to television, we immediately knew that Bryan Fuller would be the ideal person to work alongside Alex Kurtzman to create a fresh and authentic take on this classic and timeless series. Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of ‘Star Trek.’ Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us.”

The latest iteration of “Star Trek” on TV is set to launch on the heels of the 50th anniversary of the original series premiere on Sept. 8, 1966, which was led by stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. Created by Gene Roddenberry and produced by Lucille Ball’s Desilu Productions, “Star Trek” ran for three seasons on NBC but famously became far more popular in syndicated reruns than it ever was in its original primetime run.

Alongside Michael Green, Fuller also serves as executive producer, writer and showrunner on Starz’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel “American Gods,” which will begin production in Toronto this April.

Ok. Cool. Still have no idea what the series is supposed to be about. Is it part of the Reboot Universe or is it in Geneverse or something on between? It is the Enterprise?

I don't know. That's why I posted it in the "General" Star Trek forums.

Could Angela Bassett be Star Trek’s next Starfleet captain?
Queen mother Angela Bassett is a collective community favorite on the small and silver screens, playing some of our all-time favorite characters. Thanks to Bryan Fuller’s announcement as show runner for the new Star Trek television series reboot, the esteemed actress might be the franchise’s second black woman to play a Starfleet captain. Madge Sinclair was the first woman and black actor on screen as captain of the USS Saratoga. The show will be available on CBS All Access, the network’s online streaming service, in 2017.

Fuller is no stranger to the Star Trek universe. At the beginning of his TV career, one of his first gigs was writing episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He then moved on to the Voyagerseries. A true fan of the show growing up, Fuller told EW, “My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls…It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.”

Fuller, creator of Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, is a hire that the Trekkie community is excited about because of his passion for the show and it’s possibilities. Casting for Star Trek has not been announced, although he says Bassett would be his pick.

During an interview in 2013 he shared his idea of a dream cast for a Star Trek show. “I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that’s who I would love to have, you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show but that’s in the future to be told.”

The blerd Trekkie community is crossing their fingers that Fuller hasn’t forgotten his dream now that he’s landed the position, starting the hashtag #CaptainAngelaBassett.

Time will only tell whether Bassett will be recording captain’s logs on her own starship in 2017. It never hurts to dream, and “fancasts” are making more of an impact than ever in the age of social media.
This was too hypothetical for its own thread.

I have no problem with that. She has command presence. That is assuming it is true.

Since I am too lazy to look his name up, the commander in Pacific Rim, the black dude. Apparently he is getting big and I think if you want to draw in viewers, he would be good too.

Idris Elba.

Good actor. Very imposing guy, too. Lots of presence.

People are always talking about him as a possible James Bond.

Yep. That is him. He would be a perfect captain of the next Enterprise

Or a Abramsverse version of Sisko.

But I rather see him as Captain of the Enterprise F

If I recall right, he's actually in the upcoming Star Trek : Beyond as the bad guy.

That episode is one where it has some issues, so I understand the lower scores, but I feel the issues were because of them having a vision for what they wanted to have happen and what they wanted to "say" and so they had to force a few things.

Obviously we'd prefer they could have their vision and make it all flow anyway, but on the balance I think that's a very good sign for the new series.

He wrote a quite a few good and only a few crap, I think the good out weighs the bad, and the bad is mostly my personal preference (I hated workforce).
