Moreover, removing the saucer would remove the blind spots that necessitate the saucer arrays in the first place, and reduce the number of emplacements that the available power has to be divided between.

Why have a 1 square block 4 story building when you can have a 4 square block 1 story building? Go flat...

Because the latter has a much greater surface area which makes it much more energy-intensive to shield.
