It makes a hell of a lot more sense for new crew members to simply customise the layouts to their specifications as and when necessary.

Definitely. Chances are that the computer saves onto those settings and the crewmember just logs on when reporting for duty.

Dont forget... we are talking about crew member that can do quantim physics and warp calculation in their head and then enter the data into the computer using a 4 button key-pad.
