TAS Curiosity...

Does anyone ever discuss The Animated Series or is that just something not mentioned? Or has it been hashed to death and no one discusses it any more? I discovered one of my local libraries has it on DVD and I have been watching it, and while some of it is just terrible, I am digging a few of the episodes. I think part of it is the nostalgia factor, because I watched it when I was six and I think that was my first exposure to Star Trek.

I don't think that there's any particular bias against it... more like there just isn't much about which to talk. As you say, a lot of it was terrible. Some was caricaturish, and some was just chock full of accidental idiocy... like making Andorians grey instead of blue because they couldn't predict how the cells would look in broadcast correctly.

I've never actually seen any of it.

Don't rush. :P It is, for lack of a better word, very "cartoon-y." It isn't in the style of an anime or one of the modern DC-based American cartoons, either graphically or in content; and a fair bit of it is definitely aimed at a juvenile audience as was the mores for animation at the time, despite the fact of it being a 'Trek show.

Mikey has some good points, but I think some of the episodes are worth a look. Yesteryear, for example, is a great episode. More Tribbles, More Troubles was pretty funny. The Time Trap is reminiscent of the Voyager episode The Void. That is as far as I have gotten so far, I am checking vol. III out today.

This falls under that category of not wanting to crush fond childhood memories. As such I won't watch them again.

Great ideas executed rather goofily.

That is the perfect description.

Thanks, Mikey. Might be worse-might be boring ideas executed poorly. ;)

Honestly, I did try, but had a hard time getting past the kiddie nature of the show. I'd rather watch Bugs Bunny if I am going to watch TAS.

I wonder...if a Star Trek animated series was done today, with CGI and different writing......you think it'd work?

Nope. There would be too much pressure to turn it into the next SW: The Clone Wars, and it would end up being as big a drop-off from preceding 'Trek as S2 of Space: 1999 was from S1.

It depends entirely on who the producers are and how much freedom they had. And take a look at the material Clone Wars is working with: Star Wars Episodes I-III.

So yeah, a new TAS series could be the epitome of suck, or it could be a decent series. There are a lot of factors involved.

We've already seen Voyager.

We used to have a whole subforum for TAS, just as we do for TOS, TNG, etc. We ended up shutting it down because after the first couple of months nobody ever posted there.

I've not seen all the episodes myself. Ian and I tried to sit and watch them all so we could do reviews on the site, but the cheese factor was too high and we gave up after a while.

We did consider putting TAS characters and ships, etc on the DITL site... I had a hankering to put the picture captions as things like "This is an artists impression of Lieutenant M'Ress" :)
