Romulans and Pon Farr?

Post by Sanehouse »

Since the Romulans are descended from Vulcans, does this mean that they go through a process similar to the pon farr, or did the pon farr first begin happening after the Romulans had already separated from the Vulcans? Is this mentioned anywhere in Trek?

Hmm, I get the impression that Pon Farr is a Vulcan only thing, the Romulans don't repress their emotions and really just seem to be badly dressed humans with pointed ears.

I suspect it's a "hey dumby, you need to get off now before you get prostate cancer."

The pon farr causes chemical changes in the brain, and I doubt that simply repressing your emotions would cause physical changes that manifest themselves every seven years of their adult life like clockwork.

Believe it or not, but emotions also trigger chemical changes in the body. Issue is a side effect most likely. The Vulcans repressed their emotions to the point where pent up energies force a release. Same as with sleep or the lack there of.

Seeing as the only difference between the Romulans and the Vulcans appears to be fashion and emotions, what is supposed to be the explanation?

Nevermind that you can screw up the chemical balance in your brain by just staying awake for four days, or being an abuse victim and stuffing it for years. Thats what depression is after all.

I suppose that makes sense. A very logical line of reasoning. :P

Thanks to you both.

I'm just too analytical. I see a hole, and I swoop down like a vulture. :(

Goddamn. I had always assumed that Vulcan males went through Pon Farr because they refrained from fucking for fun. Because fun is illogical. :? And that build-up of hormones drove them mad, so they had to rush home for a duel-to-the-death or a life-saving fuck.

Agreed with Kendall. I always figured it was their repression which screwed up their neurotransmitter activity.

Or it could be that Romulans under go it but it's not really a big deal to them. Once every seven years you take a week off and try to pound the Miss' head through the headboard.
