I think it would be excessive for general duties, yes (although cramped corridors never seemed to be much of an issue an 'Trek.) For away missions, etc., it's a damned fine idea.

For away teams it should be mandatory. As it was the best specialised AT kit we saw were the jackets in The Cage and TMP. Indeed, I think the best AT-specific kit I've seen were the field coats in TWoK. While they were a bit bulky, they were functional.

Good point - I'd forgotten about those for some reason.
