I distinctly remember an episode of Reading Rainbow where they showed the model of the E-D. It was a physical model.

Heck, in the episode companion, they talk about having to haul out the old model for BOBW II because the new one couldn't saucer separate.

You can usually tell just by looking weather it is real or Computer generated. They look rather different.

What was the first case of digital animation used in Star Trek? The Husnock ship in "The Survivors" comes to mind, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something earlier.
