Yeah, Jake's sorta the anti-Wesley, while Nog's the full-blown anti-Wesley.

Always? He was an annoying little git initially, but I though he improved considerably as the show went on (albeit not as much as Nog).

I couldn't stand him. He always stuck me as a "whiny little bitch". I know, thats not politically correct, but thats how I always felt. He snivelled, he whined, he complained, and in the Klingon Conflict, he showed he was a coward. Granted, he never had any wish or desire to be in Starfleet, and that was the ONLY thing I liked about his character (his independence), but having a father like Sisko, and being raised around Starfleet officers, you'd figure he'd have developed a bit of backbone.

Even Nog "manned up" more than ol' Jake.

I don't mind Jake's wussiness, specifically because he wasn't the typical "blood of heroes in my veins," heir-apparent-to-Ben-Sisko type of character. Having no stomach for warfare is exactly what should be shown for someone who is explicitly stated to not want to be in Starfleet.

No stomach is one thing............running away and leaving people behind to die is another IMO.

But that was always his thing. He was always afraid of some damned thing.

Panicking while being shot at, especially given that he had no military training whatsoever, isn't exactly a surprising reaction.

That's my point. Jake wasn't a military wunderkind, and it would have been terrible writing to have him suddenly act as if he was when put to it.
