Again, the problem remains that if the Bajorans don't like you, you don't stick around for long.

True, with the support of the emissary would have gone along way towards making the Bajorans accept a new sector commander.

For the normal Bajorans yes, but their Government is another matter. The idea of their emissary having to answer to someone isn't something they would like. Getting orders from someone light years away is one thing. Bowing to someone on the spot is another.

Whenever you mix politics and religion, you get a dicey situation.

The Bajorans owned DS9, IIRC. Replacing Sisko would mean shutting down operations there, and losing access to the wormhole.

I do agree that an Admiral should've been brought in ASAP, and basically just left Sisko in charge on paper, to keep the Bajorans happy.

I think that was pretty much what Ross did.

I always thought that the whole SSO thing was a bit of a nonsense. They even seemed to say as much in the show; remember Julian once had to fill in for Worf as SSO when he was away, and he summed the job up as reading lots and lots of reports which he then had to forget he'd read because they were classified. Although Julian was obviously exaggerating for comic effect, he sure did seem to regard the whole thing as a total bore. And the fact that the doctor could just step up and do the job with no preparation or training indicates that there isn't that much to it.

Personally I'd have brought Worf in as a permanent captain for the Defiant. Would be a good career move for his character, and the Defiant is a perfect ship to give to a guy who, presumably, must be the best tactical officer in the fleet.

And as a Lieutenant Commander that would have made sense.

Worf was there for one reason and one reason only. To handle Klingon problems. Though, you can't really say that out loud.

Right - they wanted Worf there, and made up a post as an excuse to bring him there and have him wear red. As to Bajorans taking exception to giving Sisko some oversight... installing an admiral over Sisko wouldn't have been a Bajoran issue at all. Leave Sisko in command of the station, even in charge of UFP-Bajoran matters; an admiral would be in charge of UFP ops for the area, not of DS9 itself.
