How do the Breen eat?

Post by Captain Picard's Hair »

Sounds silly, but it occurs to me that they would have to take off those refrigerated helmets in order to eat, or the entire suit to bathe, or procreate, or relieve themselves...

Did the Dominion create cooled facilities for their use? Otherwise, might they overheat when they have to take off the suit? Why do they wear these on their own ships, while keeping the ambient temperature on the ship warm? Perhaps they're just xenophobes, as they never allow other races to see them? But, then, what of the Breen in the dominion prison camp before they signed an alliance with the Dominion?

Another race that we know practically nothing about... If we go by Weyoun's direct comment that their homeworld isn't frozen, then we have to assume that they really are just xenophobic. Your point about the captured Breen is puzzling, though. Why would they let it keep its helmet?

Weyoun did say that their suits were, in fact, refrigerated suits, though.

Could it be against their religion to show their face in public?

The captured Breen may have been allowed to keep their helmets as a show of good faith on the Dominions part - they may already have been negotiating an alliance with the Breen at that point. And even if they weren't, they were probably already planning too. No need to offend them unnecessarily.

That Breen would have to take off his helmet at times, though, for the purposes mentioned above, and would then be exposed - and exposed to warm air.

Perhaps what we consider to be normal temperature isn't lethal to them, but just very uncomfortable. That way they could take the helmets off for things like eating, while they would still keep them on when they could.

Maybe they shut themselves inside the fridge.

Possible. There's still the matter of "nobody's ever seen a breen," though. Would the Dominion have afforded that prisoner the privacy to eat without having his face seen? It is implied that even Weyoun has never seen what a breen looks like under his(her) helmet.

I don't suppose they'd eat hot food; do they eat their meat raw?

Perhaps the minerals in food is shunted directly into the blood stream...assuming they have blood...

As I said, its possible they were trying not to offend a prospective ally.

I don't suppose I'm the first person to notice the similarity to the Breen suit and the suit Princess Leia wore whilst disguised as Boushh.

Not by a long-shot. :P

Similarities? I wouldn't be surprised if the DS9 lot nicked the original prop to make a cast for those helmets.
