Favorite Television Show Characters

Post by Bryan Moore »

Fellas, just wondering who people think are their favorite TV characters of all time. I've had discussions of this on more general forums, usually leads to some interesting lists.

I'm doing a quick list now, but will likely expand upon each of these later on. These are in no particular order (after Picard)

Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Varys (Game of Thrones)
Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)
Charles Emerson Winchester III (M*A*S*H)
Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Homer Simpson (The Simpsons)
Sherman Potter (M*A*S*H)
Walter White (Breaking Bad)
Saul Goodman (Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul)
Dr. Gregory House (House, M.D.)

I'd throw Spock on there too, but so much of my memories of Spock are from the first 6 movies, as those were my ad-infinitum viewing choices as a kid.

Call me sexist, but this is definitely my top 10. There are plenty of female characters I've loved over the years, just none at the very top.

The common thread with these people (least so for Walt/Saul from BB) is that I would truly enjoy spending time with any of these people and think they'd be a wonderful insight into various aspects of humanity. Walt/Saul are wonderful commentaries on humanity, but likely the least enjoyable to share time with).

Your turn...

Captain Kirk

Spock

The Doctor - now this one is a little bit of a cheat, because the Doctor is one person but a bunch of different characters, albeit with some commonality. But I'm just gonna go with The Doctor as a whole.

Captain Picard

Ellen Ripley

Buffy

Sir Humphrey Appleby

Agent Dale Cooper

Blackadder - again, not any specific Blackadder, but Blackadder in total. If pressed, I would say the third or possibly second one is my favourite. Maybe the fourth. But not the first!

Wow, heck of a question. Off the top of my head, I’d say:

Rick Sanchez
Albert Rosenfield
Leonard McCoy
Rene Artois

I don't really have deep criteria, just who i can remember, fondly or otherwise. Also, I now realized I haven't watched a lot of television.

Father Ted Crilly from "Father Ted."
Buffy from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
Optimus Prime from the 1980s Transformers.
Bender B. Bending Rodriguez from "Futurama."
Zoidberg from "Futurama."
Selina Meyer from "VEEP."
Malcolm Tucker from "The Thick of It."
Ace, a companion to "Doctor Who."
Tom Baker's "Doctor Who".
Rust Cohle from "True Detective."
Homie the Clown from "In Living Color."
Dr. Cox from "Scrubs."
Uncle Phil, and Carlton Banks from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air."
Jack Tripper from "Three's Company."
The A-Team.
Denholm Renholm & Douglas Renholm from "The IT Crowd."
Bernard Black from "Black Books."
Omar Little, Jimmy McNulty, and Frank Sobotka from "The Wire."
Al Bundy from "Married... with Children."
Dave Lister from "Red Dwarf."
"Bible, Wrath of Khan, what's the difference?"

I thought about a Cheers character - spent a lot of my youth watching that show. No one stuck based on my own (as of yet unexplained) criteria, but those are some truly well written characters there.

Really interesting list! The Hound almost made my list as well, but doesn't have the intrigue (to me) of Varys and Tyrion. Bronn is also close up there.

I second that. I watched it on reruns in the 90's but the one I truly didn't like was Diane Chambers. She felt fake to me, trying to hard to be high class and educated which is what they were going for. The actress annoyed me in Modern Family when she played the mother and ex-wife to AL Bundy because she was so similar.

Norm was my favorite just because of his openings when walking into the bar.

G'Kar and Mallari in B5. Not early G'Kar of course.
AL Bundy because I like basic humor sometimes.
Admiral Adama from nuBSG
Garak from DS9. Never knew of anything he said was ever true.

For some reason I am brainfarting shows I have watched...

I only tend to watch science fiction, and occasionally fantasy...

G'Kar (Babylon 5; the later G'Kar, not the early days one)
Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
The Doctor (Doctor Who; I haven't seen Doctor Who since midway through Capaldi's, so I don't know if Jodie Whittaker is any good, but have loved the rest that I've seen)
Londo Mollari (Babylon 5)
Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)

He is Top 20. I kept my initial list to primary stars, not recurring characters, but if I threw that guideline out for me, Garak might replace Data in my list.
