Science Fiction Virgin

Post by Tinadrin Chelnor »

Sorry, I didn't know where to put this.

I have been creating my own science fiction multiverse since I was 8 (nearly 27 years) and over the last year or so, my Mum has got really interested in it. We discuss it pretty much every day, and she loves hearing about it, and is even compiling a dictionary (I am building an encyclopaedia). Anyway, aside from my multiverse (called Space Era), she is not at all into science fiction. She has asked me what science fiction films she could watch to get her into science fiction, but what is a good film to break someone in? She tried watching one of the Star Trek series, I don't know which one, but just couldn't get into it. I don't know what to suggest. I have everything Star Trek except TOS and TAS, everything B5, everything Star Wars, etc. It was Star Trek that originally got me into sci fi. What would you suggest?

Also, if this is in the wrong place, I'd be grateful if someone could move it.

Thank you kindly for any input.

It's hard to recommend movies without any idea of the kind of movies your mom likes.

What non-sci fi movies does she like? Look for sci fi that's in that genre, maybe.

So does she like action movies? Then have her watch The Terminator. Maybe Star Wars.

Does she like horror films? Give her Alien to watch.

Is she more into family drama type stuff? Try her on Close Encounters.

Does she like weepy movies? Give her ET to try.

Film Noir? Try Blade Runner

Comedy? Back to the Future.

Others to try... Jurassic Park, Gattaca, The Fifth Element, The Matrix, District 9, Children of Men, Her, Ex Machina.

I'll enquire. I think she likes comedies, but she can't watch horrors any more, or anything too gory. I thought I'd lend her Stargate SG-1 and see how she gets on with the series. She might like E.T., I didn't think of that one. Maybe Doctor Who, I think that's on Netflix (some of the recent ones at least). I also have District 9, so could lend her that. Thank you.

Guardians of the Galaxy might work. Humor, action, nothing overly gory to worry about.
