Wow, this looks pretty awesome. Seems like Chuck enjoyed the series as well.

If I was just watching the show on a lark or because someone had recommended it to me Ep 3 would have been the end of it.

Because the chick

Man, stay away from my fiction.

We're talking about a review of the show that explicitly shows that. I'm not thinking spoilers are needed especially when the show itself is also two years old.

So yeah, a 14 year old girl getting her head fucking bitten off and her body devoured afterwards is a series ender for me.

Well, I'ma check it out. Gruesome deaths in fiction don't dissuade me.

Gruesome deaths of children do.

And considering the big reveal...
It seems less a 'deconstruction' of the magical girl genre and more of a 'the genre sucks' to me. And my favorite anime is Sailor Moon, so yeah.
:?

I dunno, from what I understand of it it's not even really a "deconstruction." It sounds to me more like a case of, "Ok, enough with the kiddie version of this, lets try an adult one," and at the top of that list is showing that things really are dangerous for the protagonists which is something that magical girl stuff has NEVER managed to do.

Because straight up killing little girls gruesomely is a turn off for some people.

Well, Sailor Moon did do that a few times IIRC. And the whole tugging between normal and magical girl lives. It wasn't as 'nice' as it's remembered. It could get quite dark on occasion.

Finished it; it's awesome. Very existential, with time-travel, multiple universes, and alien machinations to prevent the entropy of the universe. It's pretty heavy.

And, it ends on a really hopeful, though somber note.

Damn good. 9/10.

I highly recommend it, if you like non-traditional plots.
