Favorite Commanding Officer--of all time

Post by Mark »

I've been thinking alot since watching the SG and nBSG series about the best commander of them all. And up until recently my favorite was Ben Sisko. He was a leader that wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty and do what needed to be done (ie dragging the Romulans into the war), but then I got to know William Adama. He littereally had the fate of humanity in his hands and the man rose to the challange. He's taken the top of my list.

I've left the name vauge to leave it open as much as possible, so we can include ANY leader of men (or women)

So, who are YOUR favorite CO?

(once we get this going, we'll post a poll)
They say that in the Army,
the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.

Roj Blake.

Granted, he was a fanatic, a terrorist, and by his own admission he starts to believe his own legend and
gets one of his crew killed as a consequence
.

And I'm pretty sure he was boffing his cousin.

On the other hand, he is a natural leader of men (and women, usually hot ones). He manages to command a crew consisting of theives, smugglers and murderers, and secure their loyalty. And if it wasn't for the intervention of an alien fleet from another galaxy, he might have succeeded in overthrowing the Federation.

I think I'll go with Khan. As much of an insane psychopath as he was he made sure his people lived. He tried his best to keep them living regardless of the fact that he would kill anything else in his way.

I mean, on the planet he was on, he kept a good number of his men alive.

M'k'n'zy of Calhoun, aka Captain Mackenzie Calhoun, commanding officer USS Excalibur.

A sort of cross between Han Solo and William Adama. :)

Zapp Brannigan. A true leader who can to send wave after wave of his own men to their deaths and make it a working stadegy. A man who understands the importance of getting it on with a hot alien babe.

You know.. I think I'm going to have to join you on Admiral Adama. He is a guy I would feel comfortable following into the future of humanity. Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, I love the freedom they gave their actors on that show. The "I know where Earth is" speech from the Miniseries did not go down as it was scripted. Olmos didn't like it, so in filming he just walked up to the front and started repeating "So Say We All" and apparently, the "WTF" reactions we see in the film are the actual reactions of the actors. And I guess somewhere in it, one of the producers asked the director "can you get them all to cheer at the end?" His reaction was "c'mon really?" But apparently the cast cheered anyway, without direction. [/tangent]
"All this has happened before --"
"But it doesn't have to happen again. Not if we make up our minds to change. Take a different path. Right here, right now."

Seconded

Admiral William Adama

I can so see that. The nBSG cast are by and large some of the more talanted actors I've seen.

I'm going to have to put Jack O'Neill into the mix.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I'll second O'Neill.

Unfortunately, I have never seen either BSG. I have no idea what channel, and when it airs.

Brannigan's the man!

"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!"

Seriously though, I think of all the captains in sci-fi the one I'd be most comfortable serving under is Adama. He's competant and genuinely cares about his crew.

Also, this should be in Other/General.

Yeah but the question is our favorite, and that's Zapp.

Totally different answer for most competent, best, or who'd I'd prefer to serve under.

Oh, in that case it's definitely Zapp.

"Why is this godforsaken hell-hole worth dying for?"
"Don't ask me, you're the ones who'll be dying for it!"

"It was almost the perfect crime, but you forgot the one thing: rock crushes scissors..... but paper covers rock. And scissors cuts paper. Kif, we have a conundrum. Search them for paper. And bring me a rock. "
