True enough. I should really go back and re-read it.

There's nothing I know of in the book to say that he "decided" on military service.

It's literally been at least 15 years since I read it; but I thought the falling out with his father, etc., was because he had decided on military service specifically.

It's this friggin' simple.

I'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK.
They say that in the Army,
the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.

Yep. Pick up Stranger in a Strage Land, too - you wouldn't believe it's the same author, but just as great.

Uzume has my copy of Have Spacesuit, Will Travel; another cool Heinlein book. I haven't read SIASL in years.

I think I got that same file. Friend sent it to me... oh gosh maybe 6 years ago and I never opened it. I got it somewhere buried on my computer.

Reading this thread has convinced me I need to take a stab at it. I loved the movie (didn't see 3 and 2 sucked). But from the movie alone it does sound like there's not a civilian choice for Rico. But on the other hand the people in favor of a civilian choice do bring up a good argument.
How many Minbari does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

Read it read it read it read it!

The similarity between the novel and the film are cosmetic at best.

You should read it. It's far superior to the film, and is pretty much nothing like it.
