Doesn't the US Navy operate an "up or out" policy? Which means the idea of an officer sitting at a rank for way longer than normal is impossible.

I guess they're stuck with it, though. Can't have a Top Gun movie where Maverick is piloting a desk in the Pentagon, navigating his way through the Navy acquisition system to buy new toilet seats for the Ford Class carriers or something.

I read a long time ago that the idea for the film was Maverick versus a new fighter plane unmanned drone. Doing Top Gun style combat, proving that man is better than machine. Wonder if they went with that? Can't imagine it's going to be Tom Cruise bombing weddings in some third world country, way too realistic.

pretty sure its only the admiral/general ranks upwards, and its five years per rank before they have to retire or be promoted, unless they have a president give them exception.

Yes they do. High Year Tenure. If you are 50+ years old the only way you can stay in is if you are an Admiral or a Master Chief Petty Officer. Or you are a reservist.

Even a legendary master fighter pilot wouldn't stay in that long.

At this point I don't think there's a difference.
