'Top Gun 2' Starts Production

Tom Cruise is kicking the tires and lighting the fires on Paramount's Top Gun sequel, Maverick.

The star tweeted a picture on day one of production on the highly anticipated sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The picture shows Cruise's iconic character looking at his plane, with the words "Feel the need" emblazoned over the image, a reference to one of the most famous lines from the original film.

With a story set in the present day and dealing with very modern warfare, Maverick follows fighter pilots as they grapple with drone tech that is making their old style of flying obsolete. Cruise will reprise his character Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

Ah, the film we've all been clamouring for. Haven't we?

The Navy has 55 year old pilots, right?

He's probably an instructor or something, because the USN likes having insubordinate pricks who almost got shitcanned teaching the next gen.

Or something.

Maybe he's returning because he's got unfinished business with Iceman. They never became wing-men.

Well, Val Kilmer can’t fit in a cockpit anymore, so...

If Mark Hamill can get into shape, so can Val Kilmer.

Top Gun 2 to Feature New Version of the Danger Zone Song
Speaking to TMZ, the song's original performer Kenny Loggins revealed he spoke to Tom Cruise about recording a new take on the song. Loggins is particularly interested in tag-teaming it with a fresh act.
“I met Tom Cruise on [The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon], and I asked him that question," Loggins said, talking about doing a new Danger Zone song. "He said, ‘Of course, we have to use Danger Zone.’

So I’m hoping to do it, maybe as a duet with a young act. I’d love to work with, well, there’s young and then there’s young. We have some feelers out to some pretty cool rock acts.”

Long ago, the idea being floated around was that Tom Cruise would be a test pilot who is part of a project to test new super-drones that are meant to replace human pilots in combat. Cruise isn't keen on this and the theme would be all about whether the machines are better. Of course in the end, they won't be.

No idea if that's changed.

I can see it being the same as that.

He's coming back. https://people.com/movies/val-kilmer-re ... -maverick/

The actor, who recently opened up about his recovery after battling cancer for the past two years, will return as hotshot fighter pilot Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, The Wrap confirmed.

The movie will focus on Maverick mentoring Goose's son

http://screencrush.com/top-gun-2-plot/
Uh, SPOILERS for Top Gun, I guess.

So Top Gun, the 32-year-old movie (faints) that made Tom Cruise a mega-star, centered on his character’s friendship with a fellow fighter pilot codenamed Goose, played by Anthony Edwards. And in an emotional scene that I still weep openly about to this day, Goose is killed. (#RIPGoose.)

Fast-forward to 2018. Now, improbably, a Top Gun sequel (called Top Gun: Maverick, after Cruise’s character) is in the works. And it appears the film will focus on Maverick mentoring Goose’s son. Via The Hollywood Reporter:

But the highly coveted role for the young men of Hollywood this time around is the son of Maverick’s wingman and best pal, Goose. Played by Anthony Edwards in the Tony Scott-directed original, the character provided an emotional spine to the movie when he is killed by accident and Maverick blames himself. The original featured Goose’s son as a young boy, with Meg Ryan playing his mother.

THR says it is now down to three finalists for the role of Goose Jr. AKA Baby Goose: Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller.
