Spielberg was the guy who had a giant shark eat a child in Jaws. Now he makes action movies in which he refuses to allow people to benefit from the carrying of guns, in which children are granted a permanent immunity from serious harm, etc. If he can't follow through on those sorts of movies he shouldn't be making them.
You forced me to remember his War of The Worlds remake, where that crappy kid turns up alive at the end, in his mom's house, in a Boston neighborhood that somehow escaped mass destruction.
Yep, another great example.

In Jurassic Park - TLW, he has a little girl on the beach run into dozens of little dinosaurs. They attack her, and a minute later her mother stumbles in, sees the scene... and screams in horror. Crash cut! Oh no, the girl is dead! But wait, a minute later somebody tells us she survived and will be fine.

These same dinos later shred and eat a fully grown man in about the same time. But he didn't have Little Girl Immunity to Dinosaur attacks.

I really don't have some sort of hard-on for the death of children. But if you're going to throw a scene of a kid being killed into your movie, kill the damn kid. Don't kill him and then suddenly say "Oh, wait, he's okay!"
Give a man a fire, and you keep him warm for a day. SET a man on fire, and you will keep him warm for the rest of his life...
