READY PLAYER ONE - Official Trailer 1 (Steven Spielberg)

Post by Nutso »

From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which has become a worldwide phenomenon. The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Well that looks utterly soulless.

It looks as if they want to cater to your sense of nostalgia while at the same time barfing up the same dystopian tween crap that came along with Divergent and Maze Runner. I don't mention Hunger Games because that was actually pretty well written and I liked the movies.

I'm really not sure what the point of this is.

If you're going to parody something, there are certain things you have to do to make it worthwhile. For instance, your story should be a good example of the kind of story you are parodying. Take Galaxy Quest. You could strip every joke out of Galaxy Quest, and what you'd be left with is a pretty solid sci-fi action movie. Or Airplane! Few realise it, but large sections of Airplane! are an almost scene-for-scene remake of a movie called Zero Hour.

Second, your parody should highlight the absurdity of the original. By and large the jokes in a parody should be things that you could put into the original work.

This doesn't seem to be trying to parody though. In fact it just seems to be trying to remind us of some basic aspect of an 80s work.

The whole thing seems to be essentially "Hey, here's the Ghostbusters logo. Remember Ghostbusters? And its on the side of the Back to the Future deLorean. Remember Back to the Future? And now here's The Iron Giant. Wasn't The Iron Giant good? Here he is! And look, that guy said "May the Force be with You", like in Star Wars. And this guy is dressed like Ferris Bueller! And the guy over there is dressed like Indiana Jones! Remember them? Isn't this amazing? Look, Airwolf is flying past! Do you remember Airwolf?"

I mean, I think Back to the Future is a great movie, and the car is a cool car. I'm not sure why anybody would think that having a person drive that car in this movie in and of itself would make the movie worth watching, though.

Here, look at this Buzzfeed article.

Remember all those movies? There. Now you don't need to see Ready Player One.

Who’d have thought there was a way to make a DeLorean worse?
