As in the festival? Closest major city I think would be Bath.

I'd love to visit at one point, but a trip to the UKoGBaNI (or continental Europe, for that matter) in't in the immediate cards. I ask rather because I've been rereading La Morte D'Arthur as well as a fair bit of scholarly commentary on the mythology and historical analysis guesswork on same, and while Camelot has been pretty well identifiable with Londinium/London, Glastonbury obviously features in its own right in the stories. Probably not coincidentally, Glastonbury is also a supposed crossroads or nexus of mystic energy pathways or so-called "ley lines" for those of a mystic or geomantic bent.

Since when? I've heard of a few different proposals for Camelot, and none of them are anywhere near London - mostly iron age hill forts in the south west.

I've heard all sorts of reasonings, ranging from the passable to the fantastic, for identifying Camelot with various areas in Wales or Cornwall (though the later seems unlikely given the nearly-invisible relationship with King Mark; ) Winchester; Cadbury in Somerset; and Colchester; these, however, generally tend to either be an attempt to force an etymology into the mythos or are rejected by contemporary associates of the source in question. Etymological associations aside, since they are so easily artificially changed, Londinium fits the needs of what Camelot supposedly was - especially considering the supposed origins of Arthut - more than any such city, as well as the distances (if not any particular direction) so vaguely described in Malory.

Huh. Reading this made me realize that I perhaps ought to ask some questions given that I'll probably be heading over the pond this summer to visit my wifes brother. He's mostly going to be in tour guide mode, but we could make a special request if there is something that merits it. I also suspect we'd be in a position to select restaurants, though we'll always have my daughters (8 and 5) along.

I read it as a story and thus real locations are totally irrelevant and to try to match them pointless.

It doesn't affect anything in the final analysis, I suppose, but I find it a diverting academic excercise... similar to reading the stories themselves.

Almost as pointless as a detailed technical analysis of what a fictional spaceship can do?

Touche, but a more realistic comparison would be trying to find the Romulan star system or the like (I am aware certain stars do show up in the show).

Specific details in a story can be interesting, but trying to tie an fictional story to the real world if anything diminishes the story to me.

Ugh, this has not been the best week. Sunday, my cousin Jessica's house burned down. Today, I learned my stepsister Marie died of cancer. And no, I wasn't told what kind of cancer. :(

Impatiently waiting for the season premiere of Black Sails. I may actually "squee" when it begins. [/otaku]
