What causes the explosion and smoke? I do not recall seeing that in ballistic gel before.

Just guessing, but the collapse of the void should cause a big spike in pressure/temperature. Might cause some residue in there to ignite?

I have watched a lot of gun shows and a lot of gel tests, but I do not recall ever seeing that before.

On the subject of the second image, I remember seeing something similar for the second Death Star - it's about the size of Texas.
