It seems to be holding on the outer shell. Maybe its to provide extra support for the non load bearing shell of the truck.

Such guy-wire bracing exists for things like the hoods on quarter-mile racers as well.

Dunno, I'm not much of a gearhead. If I had to guess, I'd say it stiffens the frame in a unibody-type vehicle.
