Enterprise races

Post by Jim »

Hi,

I tried a couple searches to find this information individually, but is there a list/table somewhere of what happened to the races that the Enterprise crew came across? Most seem to be missing from TNG, DS9, etc. Some even from TOS.

After a look through the Species section (A few are TOS species):

Denobulans
Talosians
Tellarites
Tholians
Xindi
Andorians
Cheronians
Gorn
Na'kuhl
Orions
Suliban

Sorry for bringin a topic like this up if it has been talked to death before.

Tholians--still around (they destroyed the starbase Rikers father was on)
Xindi--joined UFP (inferred in Enterprise)
Andorians--joined UFP
Cheronians--only two were left...I assume one finally killed the other.
Gorn--still around
Na'kuhl
Orions--still around, Quark had dealings with them

One of the things ENT did was give a face to aliens that had only been a name not a face.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Also introduced a number of races that by all rights should have been seen in the foregoing series according to their presentation in ENT, but weren't. :P

I think the Denobulans are the worst case, because it looked like they were very close to Earth (by later standards), in very early contact with us, and one of the founding members of the Federation, but never once seen or mentioned elsewhere (obviously, because they were retcon). It was bad enough that we had a near-total absence of Andorians and Tellarites in later Trek.

I think the Xindi are a good example, too. Able to turn events in the whole quadrant, and stated to have joined the UFP later on... but not hide nor hair of them afterwards.

Ehhhh, I can't say that's ever bothered me all that much. Given the shear size of the Federation combined with the tiny, tiny slice we've seen of the people in it, little more than a handful of bridge crews, I don't mind all that much not seeing some species crop up again. If you think about it the aquatic Xindi are unlikely to go into space on any but their own ships and insectoid Xindi have such short lives that a conventional starfleet education would be poorly suited for them. That leaves you with the mammalian and reptilian Xindi who might be in Starfleet and the mammalians could fit in very easily given their appearance. The only race that might be there and really stick out would be the reptilian Xindi.

I'm fine with the "They're there but you just don't see them," explanation here. Now on a personal level I'd love to see more aliens in Trek, the human centricity is just boring, but I get that Andorian make up isn't cheap.

It's not just appearances, it's that we've never heard anything like "Oh, the Xindi council members..." or "Prax? You mean that Denobulan captain?" It would have been just as easy for ENT to say that the Xindi (for example) faded away as a power as it was to say that they became a phantom member of the UFP.

Yeah but how often have they referred to anyone like that though? I don't recall people talking about Garrak, "Garrak the Cardassian tailor," or Vorik, "Vorik the Vulcan engineer." It would be a very odd set up. The Denobulans and Xindi are a retcon sure but its a big Federation and I'm ok with that.

Nobody would speak like that. There have been references aplenty in 'Trek, though, using someone's species as an identifying characteristic. I know it's impossible to do anything else with a retcon than what they did, but that's just another pitfall of a prequel which ENT blindly walked straight into. Again, with the absence of the Xindi et. al. in prior 'Trek, it would have been supremely easy for ENT to write a couple of throwaway lines explaining their later omission.

Hell, the Xindi could serve on "all Xindi" ships for all we know.

But I think that they trusted the temporal issue to make up for a lot of things.

Do you think the "magic reset switch" in season 3/4 wiped the Xindi out?
