SF Debris: Equinox

Post by Nutso »

Part 1 of 3
Opinionated Voyager Episode Guide kicks off its look at the season 5 cliffhanger. Voyager stumbles across another Starfleet ship taken by the Caretaker while they're being attacked by space leprechauns, but it may be that Captain Ransom has stolen their pot of space gold.
I post link this time. Also, has the guy who played Ransom been in any other Trek shows?

Part 2 of 3
Opinionated Voyager Episode Guide continues its look at Equinox. Janeway discovers Ransom's filthy secret, and reacts like you'd expect: first she's judgmental, then she goes mental.
Chuck gets serious.

You know, I like the idea of the Equinox. Desperation is something that was missing from Voyager. Berman and Braga took away tension between the Maquis and the Federation crew. There could have been some internal struggles with the characters losing hope at some point.

Part 3
Opinionated Voyager Episode Guide closes out its look at Equinox. Janeway continues her insane plan to take down the Equinox despite Chakotay's best efforts to not get them killed in her blind desire for revenge. Good luck with that.
"The original plan was for Janeway to lose her humanity and Ransom to discover his."

I think he may have been in Stargate SG-1. But I am doing this without looking up Wikipedia.

I've seen him in lots but not Trek, Chuck usually gives them a shout out if they do appear.

Another one of those episodes that had the potential to be great but wound up being about how awesome Janeway is.

The line where Janeway blandly says she's never broken the Prime Directive, just "bent" it a few times was really the end of the character for me. Not that I thought it was a good character before, but that level of sheer denial on the part of the character/writers was just... it was the moment when I thought "well if they aren't taking this seriously why should I?"

To be fair to the writers (admittedly, probably a lot fairer than they deserve) can you really say it's out of character for her?

They made her character though.

Chuck's Evil Janeway is only a slight parody of the real Janeway but this was one of those moments where the two merged.

Can you remember which episode it was when he decided Psycho Janeway's solution was more reasonable than the one actually chosen?

And that could have been interesting, if they had actually deliberately played Janeway as somebody who was going out of control whilst being in denial about it or even embracing. A sort of Captain Ahab figure, obsessed with getting home rather than a whale. It would be completely unique in Trek history.

But they really didn't do that. Instead they pretty much just reinvented the character to fit the plot of the week and then asserted that she had always been that way. Did the same with Chakotay, too.

I'd loved to have seen an Ahab-Janeway.

No, Unimatrix Zero, regarding the "let's get assimilated" plan. Thanks for the reminder that it was Borg-related - that was enough to jog my memory.

Saying Borg related on Voyager only cuts out like 5 episodes though... :p
