The U.S. didn't store up all that gold to trade outside its borders, it stored it because for a long time the dollar was promissory of a dollar's worth of gold. Surely, instead of keeping a huge cache of that type of currency the UFP could just trade for it as needed - serving the purpose of riding flux in commodities trading - with whatever it would have used to acquire it en masse.

True. But the size of the federation with the huge population it has with the numerous species and planets that use some form of currency would suggest that the Federation would need to store it as needed.

But... on the other hand, the Federation credit could be backed up by gold pressed latitnum (spl) so there could be a Fort Knox-like place. But the liquid latinuminuminum (hang overs suck) doesn't really take up much space in relation to it's worth.
