Look on the bright side - at least it, like the new phaser rifles, has a trigger guard.
Hardly helpful if SF is teaching its people to hold a rifle at rest with a finger on the trigger.

Since I doubt SF is teaching its people anything, it may indeed be helpful.

Not much help admittedly, but which would you prefer someone dropped - a TR-116 or FC rifle, or a Type II which, under Sod's Law, is all but guaranteed to land upside down?

TBH, the TR-116 would be the worst one to drop - the others are directed-energy weapons rather than solid-slug ones, so the TR-116 is likely the only one with a hammer.

Good point, but if you think about it a Type-II landing upside down would drop directly on the trigger.

You mean a TNG+ era type II? I suppose... I always imagined that there was some sort of biometric disabler, but then again this is UFP design we're discussing.

I seem to recall reading somewhere (not sure where, it was a long time ago), that the nemesis phasers/phaser rifles were intended to have some sort of IFF function to prevent them from firing at SF personnel. I think it was related to the "cocking"* motion we saw crew members making with the phasers and rifles.

I'm almost tempted to try and find a dustbuster toy and drop it to see how it'd land if I dropped it. Or if it hitting at the top would be enough to trigger a weapons firing.
