My top 5 picks for ST:TNG!!

Post by 00111010 01000100 »

Hello all!
So I know I typically harp the negative on episodes and only occasionally mention my favorites and as some one else put, those that have re-watchable value to them. These our my five from ST:TNG

<<I will try to make these spoiler free as possible for ppl who haven’t seen them>>

*I’ll also be posting a personal top 5 in ST:VOY soon as I’ve written it and described briefly what I liked about them*

But as for TNG —- Starting with..

#5- “Pen Pals” season 2, episode 15

Though slow going at times, the idea of pen pals in space is geeky but harkens back to the era of passing notes in class. The main cast member realizes they shouldn’t be doing it, but does so anyway. Great idea and I cannot recall something similar happening in any of the other ST shows. Am I wrong about this? If not, that makes this a unique episode to enjoy.

#4- “Where no man has gone before” season 1, episode 5.

This episode has been brought up before now so I won’t spend too much time on it. I will only say what I posted before, I loved the idea pursued by this story and of how it gave the viewers a glimpse of the distances their favorite show characters could travel, what was possibly to come.

#3- “Ensign Ro” season 5, episode 3.

What can be said about the sassy, beautiful, Ro laren (or is it Laren Ro? That crazy bajorin first and last name thing!), she’s so spunky and her interplay with our favorite bartender/listener is amusing! Who knew that she likes those who are trouble makers and want to be left alone? But I think this episode had two things going for it. The intro of Ro AND another take for the fans of just how much Guinan’s relationship with captain Picard means to him. It must be a lot based on the look he gets when she tells him, “she’s my friend”. Picard is stopped in his rampaging commanding officer tracks by this statement! It’s just a really insightful episode and the first real beginning of Ro as a permanent cast member.

#2- “The masterpiece society” Season 5, episode 13.

If an episode can ever be to spacey, this is one that’s too grounded. That’s not to say I hate it! Far from it. I liked the idea of a group of human colonists branching out on their own and creating a utopian culture. Just one with the doors and windows locked that no one can come or go. A Hermetically sealed population as it were. The idea that they come into contact with the enterprise because of things their ancestors didn’t foresee is both ironic and hindsight 20/20 of how perfection can sometime turn into impending disaster. While they weeded out all their internal issues, they essentially nullified any real creative spark and growth by limiting what each individual does. To quote from Ghost in the Shell, “over specialise and you breed in weakness, it’s a slow death”. All this plus, our favorite betazoid becoming to friendly with the colonies Man Of Power, lol. Well, the city Troy did fall over one woman too, these things happen because we’re human and prone to err.

#1- “All good things” Season 7, episodes 25 & 26 ( or for Amazon prime: just episode 25).

So I know, it’s an oxymoron but I loved and HATED these episodes! I loved the bouncing around and even the semi-mystery posed (that was pretty damn easy for Timmy the 4th grade dropout to figure out) to us. I really loved how they showed the future glimpses of our favorite crew members and what happened to them (okay so not all of them.. we have to wait to see some later on in voyager *cough* Barclay and Troy *cough*, *sneeze* Worf -> DS9 *double sneeze*) Still... this was hated by me because it was the end of the story, the stop of the fantastic journey, the last bus stop on the route. I hate endings to my favorite shows but honestly, as far as endings go? They didn’t do too bad with TNG. Not really. Look at DS9, VOY, and ENT? Good god I hate those endings!! Especially VOY and ENT and I would almost put VOY next to TNG for shows I prefer to watch over the other. I’ll admit VOY intrigues me more and seven of nines acting is awesome! I didn’t say her sweater cows! I said acting and I mean it! She’s amazing on screen! I digress, must end the #1 TNG

As far as any of the show finales go? “All good things” is my favorite. They did it right, they left me with a happy feeling of it being over and not the vague sense of wanting to rewind to season 1, episode 1 all over again. [am I the only one who does this?]

It’s my 5, anyone else? Disagree or agree?

Well, I can't say I've ever seen "Pen Pals" or "Where No One..." on anyone's Top-5 list or even Top-25, but I won't argue that your reasoning is crazy. I've admitted to putting "The Royale" high on my list of ones I'll stop and watch when I see it on BBC America, for nothing better than nostalgia, so I can't really say you're wrong for any. I don't think anyone here is going to knock your opinions, as they are your own and I bet most of us would have your #2 and #1 high on our lists.
Don't you hear my call, though you're many years away, don't you hear me calling you?
