Riker Sitting Down.

Have we ever seen him sit down normally - wherein the seat in question is not his normal duty station on the bridge, that is.

He also stands up in the same way and always approaches the seat in question from the side or behind...

Has he ever tried to do it with high backed chairs, ala-

All chairs seem to be just the right height for him to do that - waist height, where once seated the back reaches only halfway up the torso.

Early on Frakes had a job moving furniture, and as a result he long suffered with back issues. He finds sitting and standing to be painful. Doing it this way apparently doesn't hurt nearly as bad, so he convinced the producers to let him introduce it as a quirk of Riker.

If you pay attention, you'll notice that Riker doesn't really like standing upright either. He very often sits on things, leans on things, etc. Remember when he would stand over Data, with one leg braced against the console stand? Remember the jokes about him sitting on a console and how it might blow the ship up or something? That's Frakes, trying to take the weight off his back because otherwise he's in near constant pain.

Once you know it, it really puts Riker in a different light. You'll notice it all over the place.

I also noticed he walks a lot like John Wayne, with a sort of swagger and a bit of a lean to one side. Probably from the aforementioned back issues. Or he just wants to be a cowboy.

Perhaps that also explains why Riker constantly stands with his head cocked to one side, like a puppy learning its name.

So did Harrison Ford. :P Heck, Han Solo qualifies as both astronaut and pirate. So a pirate/astronaut/cowboy.

The films themselves never establishes him as a pirate as he is never shown stealing...

Malcolm Reynolds however is a Space Pirate Cowboy. So he checks all three.

he steals a set of armor from a stormtrooper on the Death Star. So he's a pirate. :P he was also a cowboy in the very underrated the Frisco kid.

If there's one thing the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have taught us, it's that you don't have to engage in a single act of piracy to be considered a pirate. In fact most movie Pirates don't actually do any Piracy.
