I imagine the Constellation class will give him PTSD flashbacks of the time he was outwitted by Ferengi.

I gotta say, I like the basic idea - the USS Galaxy reappears, 25 years after having vanished. A crew goes to bring it back, with Picard, Geordi and Leah Brahms along as mission specialists. When the hotshot reckless young Captain is killed, Picard must take command. Shenanigans ensue as he tries to get the ship back home.
I love the idea of bringing a Galaxy Class back, I too am still bitter how they treated her in Star Trek Generations. However, I would bring the original Enterprise back. How? Easy.

The Saucer crashlanded on this primitive planet right? So, given the prime directive they HAD to remove the saucer section or risk culturarl contamination, correct?
Considering the HUGE stresses the saucer is subjected to during warp flight, a crash is nothing, considering (most?) everybody survived I take it the structural integrity field remained intact, the saucer is in a relatively good state but put in a starship graveyeard like seen on TNG.

25 years later.....the UFP is not doing so well, after the dominion war, Romulan crisis etc. the dream that was the UFP is suffering a bit of a depression and there is a real danger of member planets commiting Brexit...I mean Betazoidexit. (After they got invaded they feel the UFP cannot protect them and are in uprising against the UFP).

Being aware of this, Starfleet decides to refit the E-D saucer and marries it with a state of the art secondary hull, reviving one of their most iconic ships, a symbol and a reminder of a better, more optimistic time. (Killing two birds with a stone, you get "the" original E-D back...but also a new ship since the secondary hull will be a new design, possible with a new warp drive going warp 11+, however, not the horrible three nacelle monstrosity from All Good Things, something more in line of what Andrew Probert would come up with. It is his design after all).

Picard, LaForge and Brahms meet on the ship and are sent to Betazoid for a diplomatic mission/conference. The E-D is state of the art but the refit is not complete (pressed for time) and the whole ship is basically still under construction while they go to Betazoid, meaning they don't have weapons up and running and are hence escorted by an old Akira. On their way there they are ambushed by rebels/pirates what have you, they barely manage to beat them off, but the Captain of the E-D is killed off, Picard has to take over.

At Betazoid they meet Ryker/Troi who are living there now and they give their perspective on the whole situation. (Nice reuniting there with no need to include those characters in future arc, e.g. they are not part of the crew). And you go from there. The whole arc ends with major crisis averted and E-D being finally send on another five year mission of exploration.

That would be my pitch and how to bring back a GCS. :D

I believe the planet they crashed on was uninhabited, so they don’t have to salvage the saucer.

Also Picards last log on the ship : “Three Starfleet vessels have arrived in orbit and have begun to beam up the Enterprise survivors. Our casualties are light but unfortunately the Enterprise herself cannot be salvaged.”

I have to admit I do not remember the details. However...the planet was class M or close enough, they crashed through a dschungel, no? Intelligent live or not, I would assume the UFP would still clean up after themselves. :D

Considering the tech level they have, my default assumption is/was that they would just lift the whole thing into orbit and then tractor it to some graveyard, instead of disassembling it on the ground and carry it away piecemeal, no?

Good point about the log-entry though.......hm..nothing one couldn't explain away quite reasonably. "..cannot be salvaged" could just mean Starfleet already decided against it back then before the log-entry was made since it was not considered worth the effort. That circumstance might have changed in the meantime.

Hard to think that a bit 'of sentimentality can solve a crisis like that.

The cost of repairing and upgrading a ship after 25 years and a crash landing should be prohibitive. A similar situation has already occurred in Yesterday's enterprise. As if someone thought of retrieving the Yamato and making one ... um ... I've already heard it...

And then in all this where does the Enterprise-E end?

In this series the Enterprise must stay far away in my opinion...

Fair point. Depends mostly how you sell it. An Enterprise with Picard on board.....might bring parties to the table who otherwise would not.

bladela wrote:The cost of repairing and upgrading a ship after 25 years and a crash landing should be prohibitive.
It might be inefficient and hence not standard practice....but from what we have already seen on Star Trek this should be relatively simple technologically. Heck..the very Enterprise-E "crashedlanded" into the Scimitar and let us be honest...that saucer looked FAR worse off than the E-D saucer BY FAR. Seems the only challenge is getting it back into orbit but with Trek technologie this should not be too hard. Cost is not really a factor thanks to communism, evolved economy...meaning if Starfleet is willing to make the effort....

Now I get what you are saying...but actually...the GCS ships are really not that old. If we consider what we heard from the Dominion War is true, most of them are just really coming into their own now, with a quarter of their expected service life over.

Indeed.Destroyed maybe? Not a question you need to tackle for now. Keep it a "mystery". If the series is successful they can answer that question at any later point.

Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard ‘Star Trek’ Series Will Debut at End of 2019, David Nevins Says
We may not have a premiere date yet for Patrick Stewart’s upcoming revival of his “Star Trek: The Next Generation” character, Jean-Luc Picard, but we have our first idea of when he’ll be beaming up to CBS All Access.

David Nevins, the newly-named chief creative officer for CBS Corporation, told attendees at the 46th Annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference that the still-untitled series should debut sometime a year from now. “In 2019, it’s not one ‘Star Trek,’ it’s two ‘Star Treks.’ ‘Discovery’ at the beginning of the year, and Picard will start at the end of the year,” he said on Tuesday.

Now that we have a name for the show, I've created a new subforum for further discussion of it. Nutso's last post with the link to the production images has been moved to the forum to start us off. - GK
