I liked it, but the episode certainly does get on its soapbox upon rewatching.

Picard's attitude towards PD civilisations has always resembled Kirk's attitude towards the Klingons, The fact that this time it was expressed towards an individual rather than the entire planet doesn't change that.

They don't want to interfere, but they sure love spying. To avoid violating the Prime Directive, maybe Starfleet should just stay clear of pre-warp civilizations. If they weren't spying on the Mintakans, none of this shit would have happened.

Actually I do not blame UFP for spying on them. Imagine finding a civilization that mimics ancient Greece or Egypt for example. Or something unique. In the case of the Mintakans the study of pre-Vulcan and pre-Romulan civilization.

I think every civilization would be fascinating to study. So many different paths of development.

Agreed, but maybe probes that could self-destruct (just in case), in combo with a science team in orbit to study the data would be better than actually having people on the surface to screw up and pollute the object civilization.

Ah, but that wouldn't create enough drama for a full episode, now would it? ;)

I'd love to see an episode about some random citizens who set themselves up as gods with out anyone knowing about it, and the Captain having the moral dilema of having to remove these natives "gods"

Not quite what I ment. I was thinking more benelovent Gods. Like if you were to go to a planet, play God but also try to be nice to them... while being feed grapes but scantily clad woman.
