Well her species also are natural listeners.

I think what it comes down to, is that Guinan was always generally better written than Troi was. Troi from the very beginning was a bad idea.

She didn't just shut him up, she seemed to genuinely scare him. How the hell she managed to pull that off I don't know.

Maybe, but it could be a blessing that we got to see some great character acting without the writers later on messing it up.
