I seem to recall a couple of encounters in DS9 that generally went :-

Sisko: Kick em in the shin and see if they back off.

Worf: Didn't work, and Ensign noname just bought it

They should have seperated straight away. Even money says Troi would have crashed into the Bird of Prey before hitting the planet.
